Industrial Wastewater Characterization and Pollution Prevention Management Plan

Absrtact
This project investigated the concentration of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the surface water and the wastewater of domestic hospitals and public sewage treatment plant. Based on the domestic use situation, toxicological data, risk quotient and foreign concerns/control status, this project proposed a list of 9 localized hospital wastewater PPCPS management recommendations, including erythromycin, acetaminophen, sulfamethoxazole, clarithromycin, estradiol, ciprofloxacin, metformin, ofloxacin and ceftazidime. Besides, this project summarized both domestic and foreign persistent organic pollutants (POPs) management and the industrial usage in Taiwan, and investigated the concentration of perfluorinated compounds in industrial wastewater. This project analyzed 23 water samples and the result showed that the concentration of 18 perfluorinated compounds ranged from 0.0008 to 93.4 μg/L. This project evaluated the manufacturing processes and wastewater characteristics of specific enterprises, and drafted suggestion to the relevant control strategy. Regarding residual chlorine, it is recommended that hospitals and medical institutions give priority to the new effluent standard for total residual chlorine, with a recommended limit of 2.0 mg/L. For phosphorus management, it is recommended that high-tech industries (including science industrial parks, semiconductor industries and optoelectronics industries) be prioritized in promoting total phosphorus control in Effluent Standards; while for waste treatment plants (facilities), it is recommended to maintain the current water pollution-related control regulations. Moreover, to ensure the quality of river water bodies, this project conducted surveys on ammonia nitrogen, boron, dioxin, and total mercury of coal in coal-fired power plants to assess the pollution risk of wastewater discharge. The result showed that the concentration of boron in the effluent of one electroplating industry exceeded the effluent standard. Therefore, this project held the pollution improvement consultation meeting to discuss the difficulties in wastewater treatment and the improvement strategies of electroplating industry and metal finishing industry.
